Breaking A Project Up Into Smaller Parts

Hello from San Francisco! In this episode, I wanted to talk to you about how I’m breaking up the timeline for this project. I took some time at the end of the month to enjoy my last days in Portugal, to speak at a conference in Barcelona, and spend time with people and in nature. Now I’m headed into the end of 2017 with a plan! I also talk about some of the security decisions and databases decisions I’ve learned from my boss, and how I’ll apply them to The App. Also, people are already starting to talk about conference season, and I realized that documenting my journey with a podcast could easily be converted to a technical talk. Would you want to see me talk about building an app with React.js, Rails, and getting beta users? LMK. I just realized that @LABuildsAnApp will give me the content I…

Using the Airbnb Style Guild, Setting Up GitHub Issues for a new Project, Working by the Beach

As you know, I’m only supposed to be working on this project on the weekends.  During the week, I’ll give myself an hour to do some smaller tasks if they come up, or if I feel like I need to make a small change to existing code. Typically, Saturday is my “marathon” coding day.  I use the term marathon because I’m working typically 6 to 8 hours; nothing too intense.  This means that Fridays are a great opportunity for me to unwind from a long work week, and prep my tasks for Saturday. Youn can listen here: Itunes: http://bit.ly/ReactRails  Bumpers: https://bumpers.fm/u/LaToya      I decided to start implementing the AirBnB Style Guide and set up GitHub Issues.  I’m relocating to an Airbnb by the beach (I’m in Downtown Porto, Portugal now), so I’m hoping to find a nice cafe near the beach I can work from while I sip espresso, and nibble…

Why I’m Using React + Rails 5 in API Mode To Build my Product

Hello from Porto, Portugal! I’ve been working remotely here for 3 weeks.  It’s been a nice stress release, being in a sleepy town full of warm people. If you haven’t heard, I’m building my own product to release to the public. The fun part about creating your own projects is that you can work in whatever technologies you choose.  In this episode, I dive into my decisions to user React and Rails 5 in API mode. You can listen here: Itunes: http://bit.ly/ReactRails  Bumpers: https://bumpers.fm/u/LaToya  I started on the code portion last week, but I’ve been trying to figure out what I want to build for the past few months.  Most of the process involved me sketching out notes on some of my favorite UIS, paying attention to what apps I like, and deciding who my users are.The fun part about creating your own projects is that you can work in whatever technologies…
